The Murthy Clinic

Apples with apples not pears

As an Ayurvedic Doctor, Naturopath, Functional Medicine Dr and a Phd in Research (doctorate in health research), Dr Vijay Murthy is treading a path that not many choose to take. As a clinician the training and protocols are woven into Dr Vijay Murthy DNA. But as a researcher he has added tools, alongside a knowledge base that many urgently need in todays complicated medical model. That is, being able to read, analyse, understand and react to the data in research papers. This is why at The Murthy Clinic an extensive range of tests are available, Dr Vijay Murthy uses his intuition and training but backs this up with facts.

How to measure a medical intervention for effectiveness has been a problem for medicine, since Hippocrates said “ a physicians judgement mattered more than any eternal measurement”. This is where Dr Vijay Murthy differs from so many health professionals with a masters in Research as well as Medicine.

Today we are perhaps familiar with the idea of randomised control trials and research, but it has not always been this way. Way back in 1865 a groundbreaking book by Claude Bernard; An Introduction to the Study of Experimental Medicine, by disagreeing with the status quo, in asking that …medicine should embrace scientific methods… played a part to pave the way for the modern clinical trial with actual measurements, rather than a physicians perception on effectiveness of treatment.

In 1898 Johannes Fibiger a Danish pathologist, conducted the first randomised clinical trial, testing a new treatment for Diphtheria. He became a Nobel prize winner in 1926 for his work.

In 1947 the then new antibiotic Streptomycin was part of the first ever randomised trial (RCT) by Dr Selman Wakesman. If this had not happened, we may never had known how effective Streptomycin was for TB, a disease that had been responsible for 25% of deaths at this time. Dr Selman Wakesman in 1952 also won a Nobel prize for his work.

We now all expect that apples are compared with apples not pears, a journey through history shows that this has not been an easy concept for many to embrace.

In 46 BC Cicero reportedly said ‘…in nothing do men nearly approach the Gods than in giving health…” Whereas this sentiment may have been true in ancient times, as a modern society it is not one most can embrace. Which is why, at The Murthy Clinic, you are at the heart of everything. Hopefully the research papers will give a flavour of the projects Dr Vijay Murthy has been involved with and perhaps you will also understand why research is both a passion and skill.
